Aug 21, 2020

It is with deep sadness we announce the sudden passing of Alexander "Alex" Yuryevich Salov, who died in his home in Anchorage, Alaska, on Aug. 21, 2020.

Alexander was born in Khabarovsk, Russia on Jan. 19, 1981. Ever since he was a child, he had an avid interest in Japanese culture and music. While studying in middle and high school, he performed many times as a part of a Russian Folk orchestra playing bass balalaika. Before turning 16, he was already fluent in Japanese and English.

At the age of 19, he came to study at the University of Alaska Anchorage, from which he graduated with two bachelor degrees in 2003 and then a master's degree in international logistics supply chain management in 2006. He started working at the World Trade Center Alaska in 2004 and during his 15-year tenure, he worked very hard in advancing Alaska's economic interests in the world. He personally assisted hundreds of companies in their business endeavors and championed their interests through an extensive network of WTCs around the world. Together with his team, Alex conducted hundreds of conferences, industry/market-focused luncheons and seminars, organized several overseas trade missions and facilitated visits of many inbound delegations.

He also taught Japanese at the University of Alaska Anchorage for 15 years, influencing hundreds of students and sharing his knowledge and fascination with Japan during every one of his classes. He was also involved in the UAA music program; he performed in the UAA's guitar studio multiple times.

Alex was very easygoing and approachable. His opinions on economic matters were sought after. His deep understanding of the Japanese culture not only made him a great teacher, but also an interesting person to talk to on various subjects. He was a great chef known to throw impromptu barbecue parties in his backyard. Friendship was his greatest passion and he was always ready to help anyone he ever met.

During the spark of his short but bright life, he touched upon many people all over the world and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his pregnant wife, Akiko; and parents, Tatiana and Yury.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2020, at the Evergreen Memorial Chapel in downtown Anchorage.
