Sep 25, 2020
On the early morning of Sept. 25, 2020, Anna passed away peacefully at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska, of natural causes. She was 89 years old.
Anna was born on Feb. 8, 1931, in the Village of Napakiak, Alaska, to Young and Elena Kilbuck. Her passions in life included spending time with her loved ones, gathering greens, cutting and preserving fish, berry picking, sewing yo-yos and making pin cushions. She took pride in creating her own collection of slippers and mukluks. When she first learned how to knit, she made a pair of gloves for her daughter, Carrie, and a sweater for her son, Tony. Whenever a family member or friend visited, she invited them to help her sew yo-yos and pin cushions. Always praising God, her favorite songs were How Great Thou Art and Pass Me Not.
After she married John Alexie, they worked together at Clark's Point, Alaska, in the commercial fishing industry. As they prepared for their first child, she ordered three large boxes of supplies not knowing if their baby would be a boy or a girl. The dresses came first; she always wished for a girl. After they welcomed their daughter, they were blessed with a boy.
Professionally, she served as a kitchen helper at the Bethel Native Hospital and Central Middle School, a fish processor at local canneries, a housekeeper and an exceptional childcare provider for numerous teachers, friends and relatives.
From 1969–2020, she made Anchorage her home. You always knew she was in a room by hearing her boisterous voice and infectious laughter. She always gave what she could from her heart. She was loved by all who knew her and mirrored that love with everything she had.
