Loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Betty Joan Brooks Marvin, 81, passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 19, 2020, in Anchorage, Alaska.
She will be laid to rest at Fort Richardson National Cemetery with her late husband. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
Mrs. Marvin was born on Sept. 22, 1938, in Cooter, Mo., to Ernest Odell Brooks and Geneva Pearl Bramlett. She grew up on a farm with 13 brothers and sisters. After graduating from high school, she worked as a typist until getting married and starting a family.
She and her four children moved to Anchorage during her first marriage. There she later met and married her beloved husband of 36 years, Robert Clair Marvin, on Nov. 16, 1973. Robert brought his four children from a previous marriage to their family as well. Over the years, they welcomed four more children into their family, bringing the total to 12 — it was a very busy household!
As a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Betty taught her family the gospel of Jesus Christ. When a temple was built in "near-by" Seattle, they flew there and were sealed together.
Betty's husband built a ranch for their family in the Yentna Valley, where they lived for 13 years. She enjoyed the peace and quiet of their life in the valley, but also loved to spend time with her family when they visited Anchorage.
After her husband's passing, Betty moved into town to stay with family for the remaining years of her life. She loved playing dominoes and singing church hymns and Elvis songs with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by nine siblings, Edna Merle, Edward, Ruby, Ruth-Ann, Elaine, Delbert, David, Michael and Dorthy; seven of her children, Mark, Sheri, Chad, Jennifer, Melissa, Christopher and Rebecca; four stepchildren, LuDean, LeEric, Angie and Geraldine; as well as 29 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her daughter, Kim; and four of her siblings, Linda, James, Joseph and Hyrum.
