On Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020, Craig Allen Smith passed away, at the age of 61.
Craig was born on Dec. 13, 1958, in Churchpoint, La. He grew up in Houston, Texas, spending his summers in Sunset, La., among family and friends. He graduated from Kashmere Senior High School, 6900 Wileyvale Road in Houston, in 1977, and later joined the U.S. Army in 1980. After serving for 12 years, with his last assignment in Anchorage, Alaska, he left the U.S. Army and continued to serve as a VA Medical Administrative Assistant at the JBER Hospital, 673rd Medical Group. He was affectionately known to everyone he met as Smitty and was always willing to go the extra mile to help a fellow veteran.
Craig is preceded in death by his mother, Annie Ruth (Briscoe) Smith; father, Joseph Marion Smith; and his grandparents, Lovenia and Kermit Briscoe Sr. and Corrine Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Natasha J. Smith; children, Capricia Rochelle Cunningham, Taja Mone' Turner and D'Angelo M. Turner of Anchorage; sister, Marie A. Mills of Houston; brothers, Michael G. Smith of New Mexico, and Demetrius Smith of McAllen, Texas; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews; eight grandchildren; and a multitude of family members and friends.
A memorial is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 13, 2020, at 2 p.m. at Legacy Funeral Home, 1707 Bragaw Street in Anchorage, followed by a committal ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2020, at 11:30 a.m. at the Houston National Cemetery in Houston.
