Daniel Kurtz

Daniel E. Kurtz passed away peacefully at home in Seattle, Wash., on July 5, 2020, his wife, son and brother at his side.

Dan was born in Anchorage, Alaska, in August 1948, to Erwin and Vivian Kurtz. In 1967, Dan became involved in the early years of the Alaska king crab industry by fishing with his uncle Joe Kurtz on Joe's boat, The Amatuli. When he retired from fishing in 1976, Dan began working for the Burlington Northern Railroad becoming an engineer in 1979. After retiring from the railroad, he and his wife, Marta, opened Grumpy D's Coffee House in Ballard.

Dan is survived by Marta; son, Dylan; brother, Richard (Margaret McFadden); sister, Becky (Kevin Apgar); nieces Breena, Shannon and Reid (Valentin Cabrera Ortiz); cousins, Steve, Jason and Barbara Lewis; nephews Rowan and Piper; and Dan's dog, Blue.
