Edward Gonzales

Aug 18, 2020 -

May 5, 1962

Lifelong Alaska resident Edward "Eddie" Gonzales, 58, passed away on Aug. 18, 2020, at Providence Hospital.

Eddie was born at Providence Hospital on May 5, 1962. He was born into a large, loving family, the sixth child of eight born to Maria Gonzales and Mariano Gonzales Sr.

Eddie had many passions: he enjoyed long bike rides around Anchorage, shopping at thrift stores, photography and music – particularly Pink Floyd. He looked forward to family gatherings and always greeted his loved ones with a warm, beaming smile. He had an unmistakable voice and laugh that resonated through the house, and an unforgettable fashion sense. He'll be remembered by his generous, thoughtful spirit and honored as the strong, creative and loving person that he was.

Living with a mental illness had many associated difficulties. The societal stigma and lack of understanding of mental illness puts additional strain on those managing an often-silent struggle. Eddie managed his struggles with a smile on his face and a warm heart. He taught those around him myriad lessons in kindness, compassion and forgiveness. In celebrating his life, the family presents a reminder to give attention, provide support and be gentle to those facing a mental illness.

Eddie was preceded in death by his parents, Maria Gonzales and Mariano Gonzales Sr.; and nephew, Jonathan Mattie.

Eddie is survived by his siblings, Albert Gonzales, Marie Armstrong, Cynthia and Philip Lazar, Lilly and Claude Mattie, Bea Breitgham, Joseph Gonzales and Linda and Mariano Gonzales Jr.; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Eddie was truly loved and will be missed dearly by his family.

A memorial service will take place on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2020, at 3 p.m., at The Calvary Church, 3800 W 80th Avenue in Anchorage.
