Ernest "Mitch" L. Mitchell, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and aviation enthusiast, passed away peacefully in Anchorage, Alaska, surrounded by family.
Born in Red Banks, Miss., Ernest, known to his friends as Mitch, was the son of Maree Mitchell and Vida (Brock) Mitchell. His passion for aviation led him, in 1954, to join the Tennessee National Guard followed by the United States Air Force in 1959, where he began a lifelong career as an aircraft mechanic. His service included the design team for the B-58 escape capsule, Carswell Air Force Base and the 1970 Strategic Air Command Aircraft Combat Competition with the 416th Bombardment Wing, Griffis Air Force Base. He completed a one-year tour of duty in Da Nang, Vietnam, with the 617th Military Airlift Support Squadron from 1969 to 1970.
After retiring from the Air Force in 1978, Mitch continued his aviation career with the Office of Aircraft Services at Lake Hood in Anchorage, retiring in 1991. He found his true calling as a volunteer at the Alaska Aviation Museum. While he restored many aircraft in his years there, he was especially proud to be on the team that restored the P-38 that is now on display at Elmendorf Air Force Base. He remained active in the weekly safety meetings.
In 1956, Ernest married Cecile York. He is survived by their children, Dennis (Melissa) and Terri (John); grandchildren, Lydia (Alex), Owen, Rebecca (Drew), Cameron, Joseph, Corin and Braxton; and great-granddaughter, Isana. Ernest also leaves behind his brother, Harold Mitchell and sisters-in-law, Barbara Mitchell and Peggy Mitchell, all of Mississippi, and a great number of nieces and nephews.
Mitch's life was defined by his dedication to family, service to his country and passion for aviation. Interment will be at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Alaska Aviation Museum.
