Findlay Abbott, 74, died peacefully in his little Homer, Alaska, cabin listening to his favorite KBBI public radio station. He struggled recently with heart troubles. A longtime Homer resident, he first came in 1952 and moved there in 1959. He homesteaded with his family on Yukon Island, where he still loved to spend time. He commercially salmon fished as a young man and graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. For many years he built architectural and engineering models with Abbott Scale Models. Findlay had a lifelong love of classical music, occasionally volunteering at KBBI. He loved to sing and was part of the Sea Shanty group in Homer. Over 30 years ago, Judge James Fitzgerald said Findlay was known as the best lay lawyer in Alaska. For many years, he legally fought such issues as the Exxon oil spill disaster. With a quick mind and generous kind spirit, he danced to his own drummer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Alice Abbott; and nephew, Nicholas Czikra. He is survived by his five sisters, Gretchen Bersch, Becky Lundqvist, Phoebe Blackwell (Don), Melissa Abbott (Vern Savage) and Meg Birney (Robert); niece, Jen Bersch (Austin); nephews, Jeremy Grenville (Jennie), Andrew Abbott (Donia), Christopher Czikra and Chris Eddy (Sue); 11 great-niece and -nephews; auxiliary family member, Mark Pfeffer; cousins, Phil Brudie, Charlene Wilkins, Jane Wilkes and Ann Daigle; and many friends.
His cremated remains will be buried in the family cemetery on Yukon Island later when it is safe to gather. Memorial contributions may be made to KBBI.org. Those wishing to share their memories and stories of Findlay may go to: www.findlayabbott.website.
