On Friday, July 24, 2020, our family lost Mrs. Flora Mae Strouts. At just 4'11'' tall and 105 pounds, she was a little but fierce woman. She passed away in her sleep at her home in Anchorage, Alaska, at Rabbit Creek, just where she wanted to be.
She was born in Pilot Point, Alaska, on Aug. 11, 1937, to Charles and Molla Achayok. She had many brothers and sisters. She went to the Oregon School for the Blind and graduated from Mt. Edgecumbe High School. In life she loved her one and only husband Henry A. Strouts Sr. He was her "Elvis." He had dark hair and blue eyes. He was from Wyoming. He homesteaded in Rabbit Creek, where he built a round house just for her. There they lived happily ever after.
She gave birth to four children: Peter Wayne Achayok, Sandra Marie Strouts, Charlene Jones and Henry A. Strouts Jr. From daughter Sandra, she had two grandchildren: Matthew D. Ault and Hannah M. Windless, who in turn gave her four great-grandchildren: Zachariah from Matthew, and Caleb, Josiah and Naomi from Hannah.
She loved to play bingo and do word search books. She also loved to watch old movies, comedies and musicals. She was a big Elvis fan, and loved to attend the Southcentral Foundation Elder Program every week. Her favorite meals were turkey legs, pork chops and asparagus, and beef liver with onions. Her favorite dessert was lemon meringue pie.
She was totally devoted to her youngest son Henry, always taking care of his needs. She loved to sing you "Happy Birthday." "For someone so small she had a big presence in our lives," stated her daughter Charlene. "She is gone now, but no one can take her away from those of us closest to her. She lives forever in our hearts. I'm so happy I was able to know her as my mom."
