George Sullivan Jr.

Mar 13, 1961 -

Apr 19, 2020

Lifelong Anchorage, Alaska, resident George M. Sullivan Jr. died peacefully at his home on April 19, 2020. He was 59 years of age. George was born on March 13, 1961, in the old Providence Hospital at 9th Avenue and L Street. He was a fourth generation Alaskan, the sixth of the nine children of pioneer Alaskans George and Margaret Sullivan. George attended Inlet View Elementary School, Central Junior High, and graduated in 1979 from West High School.

George worked for many years in the building supply business and most recently worked as a maintenance engineer for commercial properties in downtown Anchorage. George was a skilled handyman and if you needed assistance with plumbing, drywall or remodeling, he was there to help. He was unable to work over the last decade due to numerous medical conditions that required debilitating surgeries and ongoing treatments.

George was an avid sports fan and in his younger years was an accomplished athlete in baseball and basketball. His sharpshooting and ball handling skills made him a valued member of the West High varsity basketball team. In a family full of Boston Celtics fans, George instead was a huge fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and he delighted in the fact that they won 10 championships between 1980 -2010. He often reminded his brothers that the Celtics only managed a paltry four titles during that period. Unfortunately for George, his beloved Miami Dolphins were not so successful.

In his youth, George was also an excellent bowler and took home numerous trophies from the competitions at the old Elks Club on 3rd Avenue and G Street. He and his brother Mike spent many happy hours knocking down the pins at that iconic facility.

George will be remembered by all that knew him as a gentle and loving man who genuinely cared for his family and his many friends. He is survived by his siblings, Tim Sr., Dan (Lynnette), Kevin (Mary), Colleen (Ted), Shannon (Chris) and Casey (Paige); and nieces, nephews and cousins too numerous to note. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Harvey (1996) and Michael (2018).
