Sep 16, 2020
Herbert Leonard Smalley lost his very long courageous fight with cancer on Sept. 16, 2020, at OHSU in Portland, Ore., with his loving wife by his side. His family would like to thank his team of doctors over the years.
Herb was born on March 26, 1948, in Bend, Ore. After graduating high school in Redmond, Ore., Herb joined the Air Force and served his country for 4 years. In 1975, he moved to Alaska, and on Nov. 13, 1977, Herb married Lynda (Reed) Smalley.
Herb and Lynda raised three beautiful children together. In 2013, Herb retired from his work on Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage.
Together they enjoyed spending time with each other, their children, and being involved with their beloved grandchildren and their spirited little great-granddaughter. He was an honorable man, the type of man many seek to be, yet never quite reach, and he taught so many the value of quiet strength, courage and the deep love of family. He will be forever missed.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Bud (Walter) and Irene Smalley of Redmond, Ore.
Herb is survived and honored by the love of his life, his wife, Lynda Smalley of Anchorage Alaska; his children, Michael Smalley and wife Leslie, Lisa (Smalley) Powers and husband Thomas and Amanda (Smalley) Hanson and husband Daniel; his brother, Jim Smalley and wife Mary; sister, Lana (Smalley) Anderson and Steven; grandchildren, Stormy Powers, Dayton Smalley, Tiffany-Paige Powers, Jacob Smalley, Carley Abbott and Thomas-John Abbott; great-granddaughter, Meredith Murphy; and his lifelong friends, Debra (Mayo) and Johnathan Kelley.
Herb also leaves behind many nephews and nieces.
In lieu of flowers, his children ask that donation be made to assist their mom with hospital costs, home repairs or any unexpected costs that may come her way. The account has been set up through Credit Union 1. Account number is 000704016; routing number 325272063. A gathering will be held at a later date.
