Mar 18, 2021

Jeanne A. Hughes, aka Jean, loving mother and grandmother passed away peacefully, at the age of 94, on Thursday, March 18, 2021, at her granddaughters' home in Houston, Texas. Jean was born on Sept. 9, 1926, to Helen (Auntie) Johnson and Lyle Johnson in Centralia, Wash. Jean was raised in Juneau, Alaska, by her parents in the Children's' Home that they ran and operated. After graduating from Juneau High School in 1944, Jean went on and attended Northwest Bible College in Kirkland, Wash., and graduated in 1947. Soon after returning home she married the love of her life, Edward L. Hughes, on Feb. 25, 1948, to which they had three children together: Lyle born in 1949, Marilyn in 1954, and David in 1958.

The love that Jean had for Jesus and the ministry helped her serve those around her for over 35 years from Alaska to California where she and her husband pastored numerous churches. Jean never turned down a good cup of coffee and was loved and adored by all those who met her. She was an active member of her church, an avid reader, painter, crossword puzzle solver and decorator. She will forever be remembered for making anyone feel welcomed, the love that she gave and ministering to those in need.

Jean is preceded in death by her husband, Edward; daughter, Marilyn; and her son, David. She is survived by her son, Lyle Hughes; grandsons, Scott Hughes and Brent Hughes; granddaughters, Jeanne March and Megan Harris; niece, Kamilla Diamond; and her seven great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held on Aug. 14, 2021, at the Matanuska Assembly of God Church in Palmer, Alaska, at 1 p.m.
