Lewis James Sears Jr.

Dr. Lewis James Sears Jr., 74, was born in Miami, Fla. He earned his undergraduate degree at Tuskegee Institute in 1968; his Master of Education from UAA in 1972; and his Doctorate Degree from USIU in San Diego, Calif., in 1980. Lewis had over 30 years of experience in the field of education: Principal SAVE High 2001-03; Principal Bartlett High 1994-01; Principal Clark Junior High 1989-94; Assistant Principal Chugiak High 1985-89; Assistant Principal Bartlett 1979-83; Assistant Principal East High 1977-79; Assistant Principal Career Center 1974-77; Administrative Intern Wendler Junior High 1973-74; and Auto Mechanics Teacher Service High 1971-73. He was also Chairman-Far Northwest Consulting Institute 1980-2020 and Past Adjunct Professor: Wayland Baptist University, University of LaVerne, Chapman College and UAA. Dr. Sears served as Assistant Commissioner of the South Central Regional Office for the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services 1983-85. Lewis served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1975. He was affiliated with numerous organizations, to name a few: Past Chairman Omega Life Membership Foundation, Past 12th District Representative of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Charter member and 1st Basileus of Gamma Alpha Alpha Chapter Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. Anchorage, Past Chairman Anchorage Equal Rights Commission, Alaska Black Caucus, NAACP, Mayor's Youth at Risk Committee and Elks Lodge No. 1351. Lewis leaves to cherish his memory and celebrate his life and legacy his wife of almost 52 years (Aug. 17), Betty Sears; loving daughters, Lisa Boddie (Alonzo) and Lynette Sears; devoted brother, Abdul S. El-Amin; adoring granddaughters, Zoe Boddie and Laila Boddie; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, L.J. and Annie Pearl Sears; and brother, Allen Sears.

Dr. Lewis J. Sears' services will be on Thursday, July 16, 2020. Public viewing will be 10-10:30 a.m., and the Service will be 11 a.m. - 12 p.m., at New Hope Baptist Church, 333 N Price Street in Anchorage. Virtual services will also be conducted for social distancing purposes. Mortuary-Kehl's Legacy Funeral Home, 11621 Old Seward Highway. A friend today is a friend for life and the example of true friendship and brotherhood left by Dr. Lewis J. Sears Jr. will forever be remembered.
