Retired Sergeant First Class Luther Jackson, at the age of 96, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday morning, July 18, 2020.
He was born in Atlanta, Ga., in 1924.
Luther enlisted in the Army in early 1943, serving his country in time of war. He served in both the Pacific and European campaigns until the end of World War II. With the outbreak of war in Korea, Luther and his unit was quickly deployed there to combat communist aggression, with other U. S. and United Nation troops. He remained there until the end of combat actions and hostility. He was and will always be a proud "Tanker." He served in many Armor Units, such as the 1st Armor (Old Iron side), 2nd Armor (Hell On Wheels), Divisions. Also, the 3rd Infantry and 1st Infantry (Big Red 1), Divisions, and others.
Luther was a combat veteran who received numerous medals and citations. Among them, the WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, European-African -Middle Eastern Campaign with 2 bronze service stars, Korean Service Medal with 4 bronze service stars, Republic of Korea Unit Citation, United Nations Service Medal and the Bronze Star, among others. Luther was very proud of his military service to the army, and the country he fought to defend and protect.
After his military career of 20 years, Luther once again went to work for his government. This time for 15 years as an employee of the General Service Administration in Anchorage. He retired in 1978, with 35 five years of US Government service to his country.
Luther loved Alaska, residing in the state for 60 years. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ursula Jackson; son, Dieter Jackson; daughters, Cherie Jackson, Christine Berkley-Bush and Darlene Jackson.
He was preceded in death by his son, Larry Jackson; daughter, Patricia Crawford; and sister, Rose Lee Beake.
Luther was a hardworking, God-fearing, proud, respectable, honest and humble man, who would help most everyone who reached out to him.
His frequent saying was, "I'll do it my way," and yes, he lived it.
We will never forget him and will miss him always. May he rest in peace.
A memorial service will be held at Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E Street, at 12 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 10, 2020, with the burial and military honors ceremony at Fort Richardson National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. Meet at Fort Richardson gate prior to entry.
