Matthew Eric Markiewicz

Sept 15, 1992 -

Mar 25, 2020

Our beloved Matthew Eric Markiewicz, 27, passed away unexpectedly in Anchorage, Alaska, early morning on Wednesday, March 25, 2020.

Matthew was born on Sept. 15, 1992, in Anchorage, where he grew up and lived throughout his life. He attended the Spanish Immersion Program, starting at the Government Hill Elementary School, then Romig Middle School and West High School. He graduated from Service High School in 2012. He started piano lessons at the age of 4. Matthew was a born performer and played instruments so beautifully you couldn't help but stop and listen. For two years he was a member of the Anchorage Junior Youth Symphony. When he played, he shared his light. He could hear a song played once and then would diligently practice it over and over from memory until he got it right. Whatever he really set his mind to he achieved.

Matthew was warm, hilarious, fearless and resilient. It's impossible to capture a person and their light in a few paragraphs. Those who knew him, knew Matthew was so funny, and creative, and bubbly. He had this lively energy that couldn't be contained. He had a huge heart and loved fiercely and was wildly protective of those he loved. To be loved by him was an astonishing gift. He was adored as a son, brother, cousin, grandson and friend. The memories of Matthew are filled with smiles and laughter.

Matthew is survived by his parents, Krystyna and Slawomir Markiewicz; his sister, Christine Cox; his brother-in-law, Austin Cox; his grandmother, Jadwiga Markiewicz; and many cousins, aunts and uncles.

A private memorial service will be held for immediate family, and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
