Jan 9, 2020

Ollie Sybil Strommen Lubeck was born on Aug. 8, 1933, and died on Jan. 9, 2020.

Ollie's early schooling was in a one-room schoolhouse above her parents' farm. In the 8th grade, she started school in the town of Ypsilanti, N.D., and went through grades 9, 10, and 11 in Jamestown. She graduated high school in 1951, in Grand Rapids, Minn. Returning home, she attended one half year at Jamestown College before being smitten by a young man named Eugene Lubeck, after her friends dared her to "buy that sailor a drink." They married in March 1951.

Their first child, Thomas, was born in 1954 at the Naval Air Station on Whidbey Island, Wash. The couple returned to North Dakota, where Eugene attended trade school. Their second child, Carmel, was born in Jamestown, N.D., in 1956. In 1965, they relocated to Anchorage, Alaska. They raised two more sons in Anchorage: Eugene II, born in 1968, and Brian, born in 1970.

Ollie was a devoted member of Lutheran Church of Hope, where she loved attending and singing in services. She enjoyed working in the gardens at home and at church. Ollie also served as a crossing guard, playground attendant and classroom volunteer at Turnagain Elementary, where her grandchildren attended.

Semi-retired, the joy of Ollie's life was watching her grandchildren. Ollie is survived by her four children: Tom (Cheryl), Carmel (Randy), Gene II (Jennifer) and Brian ( Monica); and nine grandchildren: Andrea, Alison and John (father Tom), Matthew, Evan and Haden (father Gene II), and Alexandra, Antonio and Arrianna (father Brian). She is preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Lubeck; her sister, Charlotte Marteness; her brother, Richard Paulson; and her granddaughter, Sarah Lubeck.

Service will be at Hope Lutheran Church, 1847 West Northern Lights Boulevard, at 3 p.m., on Feb. 22, 2020.
