May 18, 2020

Pierre was born on Aug. 27, 1935 in Ocate, N.M. He came to Alaska in 1952, attending college in Fairbanks. He came back to Anchorage and in 1955, married the love of his life, Judith J. Johnson. They lived in Spenard for approximately three years before purchasing a home on O'Malley Road where they raised two children, Michael and Catherine. While on O'Malley, they had snowmachine parties from their house, riding to Flat Top. His children were raised on snowmachines, motorcycles and boats. He and Judy bought a cabin on Big Lake in 1955, continuing the true Alaska life style of snowmachines, races, rides, adventure and fun. During this time, Pierre worked at Chevron on Government Hill, traveling back and forth to Big Lake and Anchorage, sometimes flying his Piper. He loved the life he lived.

Finally, in 1975, his dream came true when he finished construction of his permanent Big Lake home. Pierre worked in the area for many years as a mechanic, carpenter, electrician and plumber. He was a "jack-of-all-trades" building several homes and cabins. He and Judy plowed "Ice 5" which was the main ice road on the lake. He contributed to several search and rescue missions in the summer as a diver and in the winter, on the trails. If locals wanted information about ice thickness, local trails or most any other topic, they would call Pierre. He served on the Big Lake Community Council for several years and received the Bob Gross Community Service Award.

Pierre is survived by his wife of 65 years, Judy J. Strong; daughter, Cathy and husband Dan Mayfield of Big Lake; son, Mike Strong of Texas; granddaughter, Hollie and husband Glenn Derr of Texas; granddaughter, Bridget and husband Brian Huff of Texas; grandson, Jeremy Mayfield and wife Julie of Anchorage; grandson, Jeffery Mayfield and wife Emma of Anchorage; grandson, Joe Mayfield and wife Robyn of Anchorage; many great-grandchildren; and a whole community of friends. He will be greatly missed.

Pierre will be cremated. Humble to the end, Pierre did not wish to have a service. His ashes will be spread later. Condolences can be sent to P.O. Box 520705 Big Lake, AK 99652.
