Richard Arnold "Dick" Goodwin Sr., 78, died following an extended fight with Parkinson's Disease on May 11, 2020, at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor, Maine. He was born on June 12, 1941, in Brockton, Mass., the son of Charles J. and Nellie Evelyn (Demmons) Goodwin.
Dick lived in Washington County, Maine, before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. After his service in the Navy he returned to Maine, married Vivian E. Dwelley and started a family. In 1970, seeking opportunity, he moved his young family to Anchorage, Alaska, where he found work as a master carpenter and construction planner.
While working in Alaska, Dick joined the U.S. Army Reserve and served with distinction until his retirement in 2001 at the rank of Command Sergeant Major (CSM). During his Army career Dick served as the CSM for the 813th Combat Engineer Battalion, attended the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy, and advised the U.S. Army Chief of Staff on reserve affairs. His multiple awards include the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal.
An avid outdoorsman, Dick fished, hunted and trapped from a young age, helping to support his family as a youth and again years later as a father. He shared his love of the outdoors with his children and grandchildren, enjoying many adventures in Maine and Alaska.
Dick is survived by his daughter, Tracy and her son, Steven; son, Rick and his wife, Karen and their children, Richard and Margaret; brother, Charles; and sisters, Edith and Bunny.
