Roger Lee Harkins

Roger Lee Harkins, 83, passed away at home in Wasilla, Alaska, on Aug. 27, 2020.

Roger was born on Dec. 17, 1936, in Mankato, Minn., to Merton and Myrtle Harkins. Roger joined the United States Air Force in 1959. He met his wife Sandy in Rapidan, Minn., and the two were married on Oct. 8, 1960. They moved to Alaska in 1982, and Roger retired from the military after more than 25 years of service in 1985. In 1986, Roger joined the Anchorage Police Department working with them until 1998. After retiring from the Anchorage Police Department, Roger worked for H & R Block during tax season until 2014. Roger instilled his family with love of his country.

A private family service will be held on Sept. 6, 2020, at Janssen's Mat-Su Funeral Home, where Pastor Joe Parreira will officiate the service. A public graveside service will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2020, at 1:00 p.m., at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Those wishing to attend the burial are asked to line up in their vehicles outside of the Fort Richardson Gate no later than 12:45 p.m. Vehicles will follow the hearse onto the base in procession to the cemetery. He will be laid to rest with full military honors.

Roger is survived by his wife, Sandy Harkins; and sons, Randy, Brian and Greg Harkins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Merton and Myrtle Harkins; brothers, Milan and John Harkins; and son, Donald Harkins.

Arrangements were entrusted to Janssen Funeral Homes.
