Lifelong Alaska resident Roy Kallander Sr. passed away at home on July 19, 2020, in Anchorage, Alaska.
A celebration of life will be held at the VFW Post 1685, 1200 West 33rd Avenue in Anchorage, from 2-6 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2020.
Roy was born on May 16, 1939, in Anchorage to Feodoria Kallander Pennington. Roy, a simple man, a builder, a husband, a father, a brother, a friend and a mentor grew up in many parts of Alaska. In Hope, he earned his room and board working at the Iver Nearhouse general store, and through good grades in correspondence school. Roy, also a commercial fisherman, would work in the treacherous waters of the upper Cook Inlet, where he earned enough money to purchase a home for his mother and build a hot rod Crown Victoria. During his spare time, he would travel in his dory from Point Possession to Old Hope in bore tides and strong currents to visit friends.
Roy served in the Alaska Army National Guard from 1958-1964, managed and owned a photo finishing business, part of the construction crew of the trans-Alaska pipeline, and then Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility until he retired.
Roy, an accomplished carpenter, remodeled his Anchorage home and with his wife Barb, built his cabin at Point Possession where he spent his life enjoying his ancestral home on the Kenai Peninsula. He often took trips to Ship Creek, a local favorite spot, because of its fresh air and deep ties to Point Possession. Roy will be laid to rest at Point Possession by his loving family, to forever enjoy his cabin home.
Roy is survived by his wife, Barbara Kallander; children, Roy (Lisa) Kallander Jr., Debbie Jacobson, Dianna (Darryl) Traylor and Dana Kallander; brothers and sisters, Sammy (Peggy) Kallander, Betty (John) Gilcrist, Norman (Ken) Kallander and Mary (Mike) Dougherty; grandchildren, Jennifer Huffman, Roy Dylan Kallander, Brandon Kallander, Amber (Marshal) Miller, Sabrina (Ronnie) Hynes and Natassja (Kyle) Cassineio; and great-grandchildren, Johnathan, Devyn, Dallas, Addie, Aubrey, Mason, Zander and Avah.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Feodoria "Mama" Kallander; siblings, Jimmy, Bobby and Cora; grandparents; and many aunts and uncles.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations be made to VFW Post 1685 and special thanks to Providence Hospice Care.
