Nov 27, 2019
Sara Lou (McMillan) Monaco, 78, a longtime Anchorage, Alaska, resident, died on Nov. 27, 2019, in Greensburg, Pa.
Sara was born on July 6, 1941, in Seward, Alaska, the daughter of the late David and Tena McMillan. Proud of her native heritage, she was a fifth-generation Alaskan able to trace her family's history back to Leman's book "Agrafena's Children." Born and raised in Seward, after graduating from high school in 1959, Sara headed to Seattle, Wash., where she went to school obtaining her beauty license. A mutual friend introduced her to John Monaco and they were married and had their first child in Anaconda, Mont. Heading back to the Last Frontier in 1962, they drove over the Alcan Highway, settling and raising their family in Anchorage.
Hardworking, Sara helped built their family home in Brentwood. She loved to garden, decorate and shop for antiques. In the early '70s, Sara volunteered her time at a downtown gift shop, the Gilded Cage, and at her children's elementary school. She was also a counselor at Diet Center and held other administrative positions in her career. Sara was not only a loyal employee, she was also a loyal and trusted friend. If you knew Sara, you knew she never met a stranger. Sara had a beautiful spirit and vibrant personality, which radiated through her natural beauty and contagious smile.
In addition to her parents, Sara was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Robert McMillan; and her former husband, John Monaco.
She is survived by her children, Andy (Anastasia) Monaco and Teresa (Darrell) Weldon; grandchildren, Bryce Monaco, Sydney Loudon and Jennifer Heitman; nephews, David and Tom McMillan; and niece, Lian McMillan.
