Sharon Galanopoulos

Sharon A. Galanopoulos a longtime resident of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away peacefully on Feb. 14, 2020, in her home. Sharon is survived by her three children, Karie Barrett, Tammy Barrett and Jason Barrett; sister, Carol Thornsberry; grandchildren, Lyle Behrenwald, Crystal Luddington, Dennis Speaks, Kevin Lano and Travis Barrett; and great-grandchildren, Jazmyn M. Behrenwald, Kayla Barrett and Josiah Barrett. Sharon was born on Feb. 10, 1945, in Portland, Ore., to the late Fredrick Staigle and Rosanna Staigle. Sharon graduated from Centennial High School 1963. Sharon had a love for education and had a dream of being a nurse, she later attended Portland State College for two years studying nursing. Sharon began her 20-year career with the Municipality of Anchorage as the Division and Executive Secretary for the Department of Public works until retiring in 2004. Sharon continued to work even after her retirement being appointed the Executive Secretary for the Office of the Commissioner in 2005.

Sharon Married John Galanopoulos in 1984, they were married for more than 20 years. Sharon and John moved to Anchorage in 1984 from Oregon, where they enjoyed traveling, entertaining family and friends, and being active members of their church The Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church. Sharon loved being around her family, cooking and volunteering in various roles in the community. She had an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with those who surrounded her. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Sharon will be greatly missed by all who knew her. We will always remember her as being consistently positive, selfless, gracious and kind-hearted. Sharon was a gift from God that touched the lives of many. May she rest in peace and God give her eternal rest.

The funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Feb. 21, 2020, at The Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church,2800 O'Malley Road in Anchorage. The ground burial will be at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date. There will be a viewing of the body held on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020, from 2 p.m. - 4:30 p.m., at Legacy Funeral Home Heritage Chapel at Angelus, 440 East Klatt Road.

In addition, we are asking for donations on behalf of Sharon's children to be made to the church with the express reason of helping defray funeral costs.
