Thomas Barrett McCormick, "T," was born on Aug. 26, 1989, in Seattle, Wash., to Robert and Shelley. In February '93 the family moved to Alaska, where his lifelong love of hockey was born. Thomas was a naturally talented goalie, earning himself spots on competitive teams. He was a skilled chess player who rarely lost, passing on his love for chess to his nieces and nephews. He loved challenging them to games whenever possible. T discovered frisbee-golf in his late teens and continued playing every chance he got. He was an incredible fisherman, known for his "dumb luck" ability to always find and catch fish. He loved the outdoors, and it didn't take much to convince him to go camping or hiking. Though he didn't play football, he found great joy in cheering for his beloved Seattle Seahawks. Online gaming was another place T was exceptionally skilled. His gaming friends became a community that T deeply valued, especially during the pandemic.
Thomas was known to be a loyal friend, who would always lend a helping hand if you needed it. He loved like he lived, all or nothing. He loved his family and friends he considered family fiercely. The family wishes to share the cause and manner of death to bring awareness. Thomas battled on and off with addiction for many years, ultimately losing the battle and his life to an accidental overdose on Aug. 29, 2023.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Shelley McCormick. He is survived by his father, Robert McCormick; sister, Alexandra McCormick Kalis; brother-in-law, Joseph Kalis; and five nieces and nephews.
A memorial will be held at Eagle River Funeral Home on Sept. 9, 2023, from 2:30-4 p.m.
