Robert "Jay" Walters

Lifelong Alaskan and Kenai resident Robert "Jay" Walters, 64, died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2020, at home from dementia and Alzheimer's.

Jay was born on April 25, 1956, in Sitka, Alaska. He graduated from West Anchorage High School in 1974. He moved to Nome in 1975, and worked as an auto mechanic. He then moved to Anchorage and then to the Kenai Peninsula.

Jay, the Grill Master, also known to many as King Coals, enjoyed cooking and barbecuing, during the holiday seasons and special events is when Jay loved to have family and friends over for a big barbecue. Many of his children's friends considered Jay's house their second home.

Jay is preceded in death by his mom, Elizabeth Walters; and sister, Katherine Walters.

He is survived by his daughters, Katherine Mary Walters of Anchorage, Melanie McDaniel of Nome, Cheri Manning and Val Leavitt, both of Anchorage; sons, Garrett Walters of Bethel, Frank Albert Walters, George Walters and Tony Leavitt, all of Anchorage; grandchildren, Daphany Iya of Nome, Natalie, Mariah and Dean Luper all of Anchorage, Kaitlyn, Kara, Robert Jay, Garrett II and Franklin Brink Walters, all of Bethel, Uinniq Leavitt, Mia, Keila, and Kairos Walters, and Ky-Ruin, Kalena, Audrey and Ayden Walters, all of Anchorage; brother, John Christopher and George Walters II, both of Juneau; dad, George A. Walters of Juneau; sisters, Barbara Eagle of Kenai and Joan Schermerhorn of Springfield, Va., and Meribeth Traynor of Bend, Ore.

A service in his honor will be held in summer 2021.
