Sharon Nowak

Sharon Nowak of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away on Sunday, April 18, 2021, at home surrounded by her family.

Sharon was born on Oct. 16, 1943, in Plymouth, Mich., to Ortt and Maud (McCreight) Sprague.

Sharon loved music and was a polished flutist. Sharon had a bachelors in music education from Eastern Michigan University. She married David in 1973. They began their marriage by moving to Anchorage, where Dave was stationed. They decided to stay in Alaska and raise their family.

Sharon taught elementary band for 30 years. She also taught many private flute students. She retired in 1996 from teaching, but remained active in the music community, playing in musical groups including Flutissimo, the Fair Weather Flutes, the Anchorage Community Concert Band, the St. Anthony's Catholic Church guitar group, the German Band and the Front Row Seats Band. Sharon received the Alaska Music Educator of the Year in 1997. Her loss will be profound in the Anchorage music community.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Myrna; and her brother, Lloyd. Sharon is survived by her husband, David; daughters, Sharida and Rebecca; granddaughters, Lainey and Kelsey; sister, Anne Bingman; brother, Ed Sprague; granddogs, Chloe and Lulu; along with many nieces and nephews and many friends who Sharon called family.
