Peter Henry McKinnon

Aug 13, 1949 -

May 7, 2021

Peter Henry McKinnon, 71, made his way to heaven in the afternoon of May 7, 2021, to meet his beloved wife, Audrey. He was born to the late Malcom McKinnon and Katherine Larson in Anchorage, Alaska, on Aug. 13, 1949. Peter married his adored wife, Audrey McKinnon, in 1978, spending over 40 happy years together.

Peter grew up and graduated in Anchorage. He then trained at the Fort Ord Training Center, Company D, 1st Battalion, 1st Brigade going on to serve in the United States Army National Guard.

At a young age, he started his work career commercial trapping in the Alaska wilderness and fishing the Cook Inlet. He worked various jobs until landing at Pepsi Cola, where he rounded out his last 25 work years driving a tractor trailer truck in Alaska and then in New Mexico.

Being fond of sports and the great outdoors, he enjoyed softball, skiing, taking his family camping, playing hacky sack, riding his four-wheeler, fishing, rollerblading and in the most previous decades, golf. He also loved playing hockey and enjoyed the opportunity to coach his son's hockey team.

Music was always the root of all things joyous in Pete's life, whether it be playing or making music on his guitar or bongos, or dancing and just listening to good tunes with good company. He was a skilled carver of wood and stone and also was known for writing the most beautiful and thoughtful songs and poetry. He was the most friendly person to both people and animals, always willing to help anyone at any given time and would always be ready to tell you a good joke.

Peter is survived by his son, Casey McKinnon; daughter, Mercedes "Sadie" McKinnon; granddaughter, Alex Vigil-McKinnon; grandson, Luke McKinnon Zollars; and so many amazing family members and many, many friends that he'd consider family. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Audrey McKinnon; brothers, Malcom Jr. "Skip" and Rodney McKinnon; and sisters, Shirley Tucker and Arlene Kurtti. Cheers to their heavenly reunion.

We will be making further announcements for services for Peter for those in Alaska in September and for those in New Mexico in October 2021. And for those that cannot attend either will still be able to join via Zoom video call to both services.
