Longtime Anchorage, Alaska, resident Barbara Jean Hempel Evans, 89, died in her sleep at home, on Jan. 21, 2020.

A celebration of her life will be held on Feb. 13, 2020, at 5 p.m., at Hillside O'Malley Seventh-day Adventist Church, 6000 O'Malley Road in Anchorage.

Barbara was born on Oct. 21, 1930, in Yakima, Wash., to Harry and Rosa Hempel. She graduated from Columbia Academy in 1949, and completed a year of college at Walla Walla College in Washington. She married Bill Evans on Nov. 27, 1952.

Barbara, Bill and their three children moved to Juneau, Alaska, in 1960. Juneau was a great place to raise children and their fourth child was born in Juneau. She moved to Anchorage in 1971,when her husband became an agent with State Farm Insurance. Barbara helped Bill set up their agency and then continued working in the office for 20 years. She eventually worked from home managing his books.

Barbara had a very generous heart and a sweet spirit. She loved her family dearly and they loved her. She loved Jesus, and her life was a testament to her relationship with Him.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, William "Bill" Evans of Anchorage; her son and daughter-in-law, David and Rebecca Evans of Pikeville, Tenn.; her daughters, Cindy Evans and Linda Carleton of Anchorage; her seven grandchildren, Lalia Bunn, her husband Aaron and their children, Cirrus and Addison; David Velasquez and his partner, Delainie Burford; Benjamin Velasquez, his partner Hannah Thompson and their children, Ryden and Jovie; Andrew Velasquez; Tony Cameron; Brandon Cameron; Ted Carleton, making her four great-grandchildren; and extended family, Amy and Eric Renmoe and their children; Eric and Amy Carleton and their children; Jeff and Lisa Carleton and their children; and her sister, Beverly Movsessian of Anchorage.

She is preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey Evans.
