Joanne Hoogland

Joanne Carolyn Hoogland, 92, lifelong Seward, Alaska, resident, passed peacefully at home on Salmon Creek Road on Aug. 17, 2021. She was born in Anchorage, Alaska, to Wilma and Swan Lind on Jan. 30, 1929.

Joanne was preceded in death by her husband, John "Jack" Hoogland. She is survived by children, Rick (Michele), Dale (Justyne) and Carol; grandchildren, Ben, JoeAnna (Devin), Serena (Nicholas), Travis (Victoria), Michaela, Jonathan and Shelby; great-grandchildren, Evander and Wyatt; siblings, Jeanette and Ronald (Val).

Joanne's first years were spent at the family railroad tie cutting camp above Mile 12 of the Seward Highway and at the family home at Mile 7. Joanne, her mother and sister spent 1942 in Kansas during the beginning of World War II.

She graduated from Seward High School, attended University of Alaska Fairbanks and transferred to Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota, where she earned her degree. At Gustavus she was part of the swim team and played violin in the orchestra. After graduation Joanne returned to Seward and began her career as a teacher at Seward High School.

In Joanne's 92 years she had many adventures, including driving to Mexico and traveling to Sweden upon graduation from college and again sometime later with her daughter Carol.

Joanne and Jack shared various businesses: a taxi, a rental car agency, a fish site, City Express and The Farm B&B. Joanne's interests also included raising chickens, a goat and pigs, picking berries and making jams and jellies.

When the Business and Professional Women decided Seward needed a newspaper Joanne stepped up to be editor of The Petticoat Gazette. Later she and Beverly Dunham published The Seward Phoenix Log.

Joanne volunteered at the American Legion, Elks, Pioneers of Alaska and Resurrection Lutheran Church.

Graveside services will be held at the Legion Cemetery at 3 p.m. on Sept. 4, 2021, with reception following at First Lake Pavilion.
