Howard Morgan

Beloved husband, father, brother and friend, Howard "Sonny" Morgan, 81, of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away of congestive heart failure at the home he built in Anchorage on Friday, Aug. 6, 2021. His wife, Margo, was by his side.

Howard was born in Pine Bluff, Ark., to Howard L. Morgan Sr. and Mary M. Morgan. He grew up in Richland, Wash., and graduated from Columbia High School. He and Margo Farrish met on a blind date as freshmen, went together for four years and were married June 16, 1962, two weeks after they graduated from Washington State University. They recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.

While working as a teaching assistant for his master's degree in industrial arts education at WSU in 1968, he was hired to teach Industrial Arts at Romig Junior High in Anchorage. He and Margo drove up the Alcan Highway in an old truck and 8' camper with their children, Monty (4 1/2) and Joan (1 1/2). After eight years of teaching, he left to form his own home building business, Building Crafts. He was a member of the Anchorage Home Builders Association and served as its President in 1981 and 1982.

He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, camping, fishing and hunting. He also loved to play golf and tennis as well as baseball. He played Little League, was a pitcher for WSU and a coach at Kent Meridian High School.

He had a lifetime passion for woodworking, from the prize-winning cedar hope chest he made for his mother in high school to the Christmas toys he had his Romig students make and donate to foster kids, as well as the beautiful wooden objects he made in his later years for his home and as gifts.

Howard is survived by his wife, Margo; children, Monty Morgan and Joan Morgan; sisters, Suzy Henry, Cindy Moore; and brother, Jim (Woody) Morgan. He was preceded in death by his parents; and older sister, Mary Lutz.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Kincaid Park Chalet, 9401 Raspberry Road in Anchorage, on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2021, from 2-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the American Heart Association.
