George "Gary" Pickens

George "Gary" Pickens, age 65, passed away at Mat-Su Regional Hospital on Sept. 20, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was born on Aug. 10, 1956, in Anchorage, Alaska, to his parents Ernest and Virginia Pickens.

Gary graduated from East High School, class of 1974. Most of his career was as member of Teamsters Local 959 as a truck driver. He also worked with SBS, Uresco and People Mover. He had been retired at the time of his passing.

Gary was a true Alaskan outdoorsman who loved anything hunting and fishing. He especially loved spending time with family and friends, but his main love in life was his son Thornne. He had a vibrant personality that was a lot of fun to be around and many good times were had by all who knew him, especially in the outdoors setting.

Gary is preceded in death by his loving parents, Ernest M. Pickens and Virginia Ann Iverson.

Gary is survived by his son, Thornne Pickens; siblings, Lora Burgamy, Sharon Brown (Kevin) and Gregg Pickens (Wendi); nieces and nephews, Scott Lee (Kadie) and family, Jenna Wrice and family, Michael Burgamy, Kevin Burgamy, Kate Perkins (Koby) and family, Emily Burgamy, Jayson Pickens, Inez Pickens and Dameon Pickens; along with his uncle, Ronald Bruhn (Sandra Bruhn) of Washington; as well as many cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews and friends.

The family will be holding a Celebration of Life on Oct. 9, 2021, at the American Legion, Post 28, 7001 Brayton Drive in Anchorage, from 1-3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Thornne Pickens at Denali Federal Credit Union account # 753564112500.
