Lyle Edward Dickey, 76, of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away on Nov. 21, 2022. Born in Greenfield, Iowa, on Aug. 6, 1946, he was the only son of Edward S. Dickey and Alice Ardell Dickey (Matthews).
Lyle grew up in Greenfield and Charter Oak, Iowa, until joining the U.S. Air Force in September 1964. He retired with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant in October 1986, after serving 22 years. Lyle worked a second career in Civil Service, 1986-2016, most recently with 3rd Transportation Squadron Vehicle Maintenance, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska. His retirement was prompted by his granddaughters moving to Alaska. Mr. D., as he was called, was known as a hard worker, great supervisor, mentor and friend by his co-workers.
Lyle was loved by all the kids in the neighborhood, affectionately earning the nickname Uncle Wally. He would help fix bikes and build snow forts for the kids. He had a special talent for getting the fussiest baby to sleep.
Lyle met and fell in love with Thanh in Vietnam. They married and had two daughters: Lan and Kim. Lyle and Thanh celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary this year.
Lyle was a devoted family man; his primary concern was making sure Thanh and his daughters were taken care of. He instilled a sense of fiscal responsibility and independence in his girls from a young age. Lan and Kim also inherited Lyle's wry sense of humor and quick wit.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; and nephew, Matthew Peer.
He is survived by his wife, Thanh "Tanya" Dickey of Anchorage; daughters, Lan (Ben) Sutton of Eagle River, Alaska, and Kim Dickey of Anchorage; granddaughters, Megan and Abby Sutton; sister, Mary (Thomas) Peer of Massachusetts; and nieces, Susan (Joseph) Teixeira and Beth Peer.
