Dec 1, 2022
On Dec. 1, 2022, Georgia Anderson passed away at home from a broken heart. Just eight months after the love of her life and husband of 70-plus years, Chuck Anderson, passed away.
Georgia was born on Jan. 2, 1933, in Tarrytown, N.Y., to George and Vera Sonntag. She was the youngest of three girls. Georgia lost her mother at a very young age and was raised by her father in New York, who later moved them to Seattle her senior year of high school. After living a short time in Seattle her father found work in Kodiak, Alaska, so they moved there. She had never been to Alaska so this was an exciting time for her and little did she know she would meet her future husband, Chuck Anderson. As our family has heard this wonderful love story many times, she always said it was love at first sight when she first laid eyes on Chuck. She didn't live in Kodiak long but she fondly shares stories of their sweet relationship.
After high school graduation when she was only 16, Georgia left Kodiak and returned to New York. Georgia was fiercely independent and strong willed and lived on her own for about two years, but always said she left her heart in Alaska and with Chuck. During that time Chuck joined the Army and was stationed at Ft. Richardson and while there he proposed to Georgia through the mail and sent an engagement ring to his future bride. Georgia loved to tell the story about how she returned to Alaska to marry Chuck on a "non-scheduled" airline that landed at Merrill Field during the middle of the night. That morning after landing she would tell us how she was unable to reach Chuck so a nice cab driver suggested she wait at the old Anchorage Hotel where she eventually would connect with Chuck. On Dec. 8, 1951, they were married in a small Quonset hut chapel on Ft. Richardson Army Base.
Georgia worked as a bookkeeper while also raising their two children, Charlie and Patti. Along with being a loving mother, she was a devoted wife to Chuck. They spent many years at their cabin on Big Lake and also enjoyed boating and fishing in Seward and Homer. Georgia was an avid tennis player and spent many hours at the Anchorage Racquet Club with Chuck and their son Charlie. During her retirement years they spent time in Maui, Hawaii, enjoying the ocean and winter months in Lake Havasu, Ariz., where they also enjoyed the sunshine and playing tennis.
Georgia and Chuck lost their son Charlie in 2011, and it was after that they both lived with broken hearts. It was their grandson Chas, Charlie's son, who filled their later years with love and support. The three of them were very close and deeply loved one another and spent vacations and time together which was healing for all of them.
Georgia is survived by her grandson, Chas Anderson; daughter, Patti Juliussen; granddaughter, Katrina Mack; loving family, Kristina Anderson and Wyche Ford; along with many neighbors and friends who helped and loved them so much.
She was preceded in death by her husband of over 70 years, Chuck; mother and father, George and Vera; two sisters, Fay and Helen; and loving son, Charlie Anderson.
The celebration of life and burial service will be scheduled for spring 2023 and announced at a later date.
