Joseph "Joe" P. Mahaney, 52, is remembered as a loving husband, father, son, big brother, family man and loyal friend. He was born in Maine to Theodore Mahaney and Rhonda Boyles. Thirty years ago, he fell in love with Heather H. Crouse, his childhood sweetheart and 14 years ago, they were married. For three decades they have been living their Alaskan love story together. He has been her soul mate, protector and knight in shining armor. She has been the great love of his life.
Joe was a consummate gentleman who loved his three cats, golf, America, John Wayne, old rock and roll and country tunes, great movies, Jameson Black Barrel whiskey and all things decent and honorable.
He was a superb craftsman and artist who enjoyed designing, drafting and fabricating one-off projects. He was the quintessential outdoorsman and learned to hunt and fish as a young boy at his father's side. He loved the tradition, and he loved the good natured competition and camp camaraderie.
He was a sports aficionado who had a great pitching arm. He loved his beautiful trucks and kept everything he owned polished to a high gleam. He was a cat whisperer and a raconteur, and we will deeply miss his robust laughter and side-splitting stories around a good campfire.
In recent years, Joe, his daughter Lauren and son-in-law Anthony have enjoyed summer salmon fishing together on the Kenai River.
Joe was preceded in death by great-grandfather, Herman Butler; stepgrandmother, Faye Greene; stepmother, Joanne; grandmother, Marcia; nephew, Liam; grandfather, Rev. Richard O. Greene; dear friend, Glenn "Mac" Maguire; stepfather, Vernon Boyles; aunt, Lavenia "Veenie" Bouchard; and mother-in-law, Nonie G. Crouse.
Joe will be deeply missed by his wife, Heather; daughter, Lauren Bohovich and husband Anthony; father, Theodore; stepmom, Jill; mother, Rhonda; father-in-law, Calvin Crouse Sr.; maternal stepgrandmother, Mary; brothers, Gary and John and wife Shiela; brother-in-law, Calvin Crouse Jr. and wife Tia; sister-in-law, Cathie Crouse; nephews, Devon and Taylor Novak; nieces, Grace Mahaney and Lyndsay Fuller; cousins, Kyle, Erica, Ryan, Matt, Michael "Aaron", Christian, Marcy, Shane and Haley; dear friends, Frank and Linda Persichetti and Nancy "Jeanie" Maguire and her clan; numerous other cousins, aunts and uncles; and beloved cats, Lulu, Stella and Sadie.
There will be a celebration of life in Kasilof, Alaska, during July 2023. Family and friends will be notified of the date and location.
