On Sunday, Aug. 20, 2023, Karen Healy Parker died peacefully at her home in Anchorage, Alaska, with her loving husband, Wayne, by her side. She was 69.
Karen was born on Jan. 29, 1954, in Dennison, Texas, to Loris (Theriault) Healy and James M. Healy Sr. She spent her early life in Barre, Vt. As a young adult she followed her sister, Patricia Orlandi, to Anchorage. The two were later joined by their sister, Robin Matlack, and eventually their brother James Healy made his way to Anchorage for a time as well. It was in Anchorage that Karen met and married the love of her life, Wayne Parker. They were married on July 8, 1977, and enjoyed a long and happy marriage of 46 years.
Karen worked for the State of Alaska, Department of Health and Social Services, for more than 30 years. She took pride in her career and the contributions that she made to the people of the state of Alaska.
She was extremely sharp and entertained all who knew her with a hilarious and quick-witted sense of humor. She was a voracious book reader and had a passion for colorful art and collectibles. She enjoyed many creative interests and was excellent at crocheting, knitting and a wide-ranging assortment of other artistic and colorful hobbies. She had a mother's heart and an infinite love for her dogs. Her home was a haven for the many dogs that she adopted, rescued and raised. Even some that were abandoned and difficult to place, found a loving forever-home with her.
She is survived by her husband, Wayne; and sisters, Pat and Robin.
The family sends special thanks to Judy Mendez for the wonderful care she provided to Karen. A celebration of life will be held at the Parker residence on Sept. 9, 2023, from 1-3 p.m. For those who wish, donations in Karen's memory may be made to Friends of Pets, P.O. Box 240981, Anchorage, AK 99524; or any animal rescue organization.
