Steven Earl Sandberg

Apr 20, 1942 -

Sep 16, 2023

Steven Earl Sandberg passed away peacefully on Sept. 16, 2023, at the home he built in Chugiak, Alaska. He was 81 years old.

Steve was born on April 20, 1942, in Los Angeles, Calif. Steve was the second son born to Vera Clark Sandberg and Jay Sandberg. As a youth, Steve and his older brother spent several summers with their grandparents in Huntington, Utah, riding horses and eating from their garden. It was a highlight of Steve's life and influenced how he wanted to live his own life.

After graduating from North High in Torrance, Calif., Steve went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University Provo. He also served as a reservist in the U.S. Army.

Steve served for two and a half years in Chile as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

During college, Steve spent a summer working in Southeast Alaska. While there, he developed his love for clean air and open horizons.

Steve was married to Janie Cagle in 1972 at the Los Angeles Temple. They lived in El Segundo, Calif., for one year until the lure of Alaska brought them to Chugiak, where Steve worked as a journeyman carpenter, journeyman electrician and electrical contractor. He loved bow hunting, river fishing, canoeing and raising his own organic garden.

As an active and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Steve served in several bishoprics and had a love for the scouting program. As a couple, Steve and Janie served in the Maplewood Spanish Branch for five years, which they loved. In 2011, they served in the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie, Hawaii, as senior missionaries.

Steve is survived by his wife of 51 years, Janie; and children, Kelly Sandberg of Anchorage, Alaska, Shane Sandberg of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Kristen Healy of Chugiak. He will be sorely missed by his grandchildren: Canyon Sandberg, Landen Healy, Mesa Rock, Sparkle Rock and Colton Healy. Additional survivors include his brothers, Clark, Ford and David; and sister, Jan.

A memorial Service will be held on Oct. 5, 2023, at 7 p.m., at the LDS Chapel, 10012 Chandalar Street in Eagle River, Alaska. For a virtual link to the service, email chinookak@mtaonline.net. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations to Katie's Handprint, katieshandprint.org.
