Jan 24, 2024
Douglas Gordon Green, 69, passed away peacefully in his home in Eagle River, Alaska, on Jan. 24, 2024. He was surrounded by his family during his final days and able to gain rest after complications of Parkinson's disease.
Doug was born on April 26, 1954, in Anchorage, Alaska, to Gordon and Viola Green. He grew up in downtown Anchorage with his parents and his sister. Doug was an avid skier, spending much of his free time both as a teen and an adult on the slopes of Alyeska. He loved the beauty of Alaska and spending time at his family cabin on Kenai Lake.
After graduating from West High School in 1972, Doug was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a full-time mission in Hamburg, Germany, from 1974-76. Doug married his high school sweetheart, Lynne Watson Green, in 1977 and together they raised four children in Eagle River.
A lifelong Alaskan, Doug completed his architectural degree at the University of Oregon then joined the firm of McCool McDonald in 1978, In 1984, he purchased the firm with John McCool and Michael Carlson, renaming it to McCool Carlson Green, Architects. Doug retired in 2018, after four decades of distinguished service to Alaska. Among his notable projects are the Spring Creek Correctional Center, the Skagway Border Station, Chez Braun Office Building, along with many others. He also worked as the lead architect on many buildings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including chapels, seminary buildings and the beautiful Anchorage temple.
He will be remembered not for buildings he designed, but for the genuine love and compassion he had for those he came into contact with. He served in many church leadership positions as well as numerous professional capacities and had an admirable impact for good wherever he was and whatever he was doing. He never passed up an opportunity to show his love for his family and valued time spent with them.
He is survived by his wife, Lynne; daughters, Megan (Derick Walburger), Jessica (Nate Ostermiller) and Katelyn (Jordan Ryskamp); son, Carter (Mannu); 11 beautiful grandchildren; and sister, Teresa Gifford. A funeral service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Alpenglow Chapel, 19701 Driftwood Bay Drive in Eagle River, at 10 a.m., on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024. Please join us as friends and family to honor this good man. The Service will be made available to stream on Zoom and information can be found on legacyalaska.com.
The family is grateful for all the love and support shown to Doug and Lynne over the years and for the countless acts of service done on their behalf. His children are especially grateful for all of the kind friends and family in Alaska that have been able and willing to be our hands when we were not able to be there in person.
