Price E. Qaiyaan Brower, a North Slope leader, Marine Corps veteran, pilot, subsistence whaler and friend to many, died in Anchorage, Alaska, on Feb. 10, 2024. He was 71.
Price was born and raised in Utqiagvik, Alaska, the land of the Inupiat and his forever home. He believed strongly in opportunities for the Arctic and the future of its people. This led him into a long career with an unwavering dedication to community.
His service to the North Slope and Alaska was extensive: he was a board member and president of Barrow Utilities and Electric Cooperative Inc. for 20 years, pilot and director of the North Slope Borough Search and Rescue department for decades and served in several leadership roles during his 24 years as a board of director for Ukpeagvik Inupiat Corporation.
Price also volunteered time to the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium, Barrow Booster Club, V.F.W. Post #9890 and the Barrow Volunteer Search and Rescue. He was a proud member of the Aircraft Owners Pilot Association, National EMS Pilots Association, National Association for Search and Rescue Incident Command, National Rifle Association of America and the North Slope Aviation Association.
Price is survived by his beloved life partner, Karen Burnell of Utqiagvik; daughter, Dr. Pearl K. Brower and son-in-law Jesse Darling of Utqiagvik and Anchorage; son, Clinton Brower of McArthur, Calif.; son, Jerry and daughter-in-law Angela Burnell of Utqiagvik; and Amanda Burnell of Utqiagvik.
Price never met a stranger. He used humor to bring down walls. And he believed greatly in the power of community. His legacy of service will continue to uplift and inspire all those he leaves behind.
A celebration of life was held on Feb. 19, 2024, at the Barrow High School Gymnasium.
