Norman Albert Ditsworth passed away on May 1, 2024, at the age of 82. Born in Medford, Ore., on May 11, 1941, to Richard and Rose Ditsworth, Norman's life was marked by kindness, resilience and a positive outlook.
After graduating from Ashland High in Ashland, Ore., in 1959, Norman served honorably in the U.S. Navy for six years. His time in the Navy instilled in him a strong work ethic and a commitment to service. Following his military service, he attended Southern Oregon College.
In 1966, Norman moved to Alaska, where he found a new home and purpose. He worked for RCA at various White Alice sites, contributing to critical communication infrastructure. It was during his time in Alaska that he met Gertrude "Gertie" Benkers, the love of his life. They married on July 16, 1977, and their union was filled with love, laughter and shared dreams.
Norman had many adventures in his life that included traveling abroad to install satellite communication systems in Mogadishu in 1993, and later in Russia.
His love for people extended to animals and his passion for cats. Norman showed cats and grew catnip, sharing his joy with feline companions. He owned Alaskan Cloudbusters, a company that crafted catnip toys - a testament to his creativity and love for animals.
For over two decades, Norman worked with the Matanuska School District in telecommunications. He retired in 2016, leaving behind a legacy of service and compassion.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Rose Ditsworth; brother, Robert "Wayne" Ditsworth; and daughter, Michelle Lynn Ditsworth. He is survived by his devoted wife, Gertrude "Gertie" Ditsworth of Palmer, Alaska; sister, Glenda Bray of Medford, Oregon; seven children; 19 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Norman's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him - a beacon of positivity, kindness and unwavering love.
