Jun 17, 2024

Joan Landis, age 87, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2024, in the cherished home where she and her beloved husband, Paul, had lived for over four decades. Born on Dec. 16, 1936, in the Bay Area of California, Joan lived a life defined by dedication, warmth and community spirit.

Joan began her career as an elementary teacher in California, where she met her soulmate, Paul Landis. After Paul moved to Alaska, Joan soon followed. In 1967, as a single mom, Joan and her young son Bruce left Berkeley and drove up the Alcan in a Volkswagen Beetle, just the two of them. Her son would later remark that she was a real sourdough. Joan continued her teaching career in Anchorage, Alaska, educating numerous students throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s. She retired from the Anchorage School District but stayed in touch with many of her students.

Joan and Paul were married in Anchorage in 1975, moving into their house on their wedding day, which would become their lifelong home.

Beyond her professional life, Joan and Paul embraced a spirit of adventure. They explored the natural wonders of Alaska, sailing its pristine waters and experiencing the breathtaking landscapes. Their love for travel extended beyond Alaska; they went on numerous cruises and visited many countries, exploring diverse cultures and making lifelong memories. These adventures were a testament to their zest for life and their deep bond, enriching their lives and broadening their horizons.

Late in life, Joan discovered a passion for running, a pursuit that became a defining aspect of her later years. Her email address, jlandisrunner, was a testament to her enthusiasm for the sport. She entered and won her first race, a fundraiser for Inlet View School, now known as the Salmon Run, at age 51, in 1987. Her husband Paul always met her at the finish line with a bouquet of flowers. Joan typically placed first or second in her age group in every race she entered and was an active member of the Anchorage Running Club, where she also served as a race director for local 5K and 10K races.

Joan won her age group in "women only" races in Seattle in the late 1980s. Her favorite races were the 10K and half-marathons. She also ran two legs in the famous 110-mile Klondike Relay race from Skagway to Whitehorse, one of her many running accomplishments. In her late 60s, Joan switched from running to playing tennis to spend more time with her husband. She would continue playing tennis till she was 80.

Joan was very giving and involved with the dog rescue community, donating throughout her life to many organizations that catered to animals in need of homes.

Paul passed away peacefully in their home, and now Joan has followed, completing their journey together in the place they loved most. Their home stands as a testament to their enduring love and the countless lives they touched.

Joan was preceded in death by her brother, Jack Wolfenden. She is survived by her loving son, Bruce Thompson; daughter-in-law, Pamela; and grandchildren, Jared, Jacob and Julia, who all reside in the Bay Area of California. She also leaves behind: many cherished nieces and nephews, with whom she maintained close relationships until the end; her loyal companion whom she loved dearly, Cooper, her English shepherd.; and many countless friends from all walks of life.

Joan was a loyal and faithful friend to countless people she met over her adventurous 87 years. She was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her.

A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
