Judith Moore

Judith K. Moore, 85, passed away on May 6, 2024. She was born on May 4, 1939, in Milwaukee, Wis., the Vera and Richard Crosse. She grew up in Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and Oklahoma. She married Robert Sidney Moore of Anchorage, Alaska, in 1959, with whom she had two children: Neith Flood and Dawson Moore. They were divorced in 1984.
A lifelong learner and educator, she completed her V.A. and M.A. in English literature from the University of Oklahoma in 1965 and 1967, and her Ph.D. in English from Cornell University in 1970. In her academic career, she taught at Fisk University, SUNY Oswego, and the University of Alaska Anchorage from 1984 through 2012. She was the first female member of the English Department, and she served twice as Department Chair, as well as as Interim Chair of Foreign Languages. She retired as Professor Emerita.
She married her second husband, visual artist and military veteran Ted Herlinger (died 2015), in 1987. They enjoyed collecting art and traveling together in England, sometimes with groups of students, sometimes on sabbaticals during which she researcher her books, articles and conference papers. After her retirement, she continued to travel with Ted and with friends and with her children; she also took up working with the faith-based nonprofit organization Anchorage Faith in Action – Congregations Together. She was an active member of Central Lutheran Church. She is survived by her children; granddaughter, Olivia Flood; and brother, renowned musician Jon Crosse.
A service will be held at Central Lutheran on Thursday, June 18, 2024, at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to either Central Lutheran Church - undesignated funds - or Lutheran Social Services of Alaska.
