Aug 15, 2024

Thomas Joseph Henehan, born May 13, 1948, in Peoria, Ill., passed away peacefully on Aug. 15, 2024, at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska, surrounded by loved ones.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Tom was the youngest of five children born to William and Meta Henehan. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Margaret Childs; brothers, Jack and James Henehan; and wife, Penny Hlavna.

Tom is survived by his three children, Jerusha, Aaron, and Evan Henehan; brother, Mike Henehan; daughter-in-law, Tara; grandkids, Madison, Rayden and MaKayden White; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Tom arrived in Alaska in the late 1970s to address the Y2K bug and felt an immediate connection to the state, echoing John Denver's lyrics - "He came home to a place he'd never been before." After completing his assignment, he and Penny sought to remain in Alaska, a decision that was cemented when the USPHS stationed Penny there. Tom quickly fell in love with Alaska's hiking trails and remained dedicated to the state ever since.

He was known for his unwavering support and presence at all school and sports events.

A memorial service will be held at St. Patrick's Parish on Muldoon at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024.
