Aug 8, 2024
The angels descended and escorted our loved one to the place of no more pain, suffering and tears on Aug. 8, 2024, at 92 years of age, at the Alaska Native Medical Center. Regina was born on March 6, 1932, in the village of Ruby on the Yukon River. Tuberculosis took Regina's mother, Laura (George) Pitka, when she was 2 years of age, leaving her father, Harry Pitka, with four children. Jenny Jacob and her daughter Belena (Jacob) Williams assisted in raising Regina in the Ruby/Kokrines area. She lived and worked in Seward, Alaska; Kansa City, Miss.; New York, N.Y.; Johnson City, Tenn.; and Chico, Calif.; before moving back to Alaska in the 1950s. She attended Junior College in California.
When back in Alaska, Regina was employed first in the banking sector and then for 40 years with Chugach Electric Association, from which she retired. She valued her Athabascan heritage and was proud of her father as one of the "serum runners" that relayed much needed diphtheria medicine to Nome by dog team in 1925.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert "Bob" Eagleton; mother, Laura (George) Pitka; father, Harry James Pitka; sisters, Elsie King and Nancy Jones; brothers, George and Sherman Pitka; first cousin, Don Honea Sr.; nephews, Michael Jones, James King III, Richard King and David Smith; niece, Regina Jones; and grandniece, Lora Harding; in addition to numerous aunts and uncles.
She leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Jim Oliver; granddaughter, Julie Oliver; son, Darin Eagleton; nieces, Jennifer Jones of Georgia, Elsie M. King, Valene Kotongan and Elizabeth Forsberg of Anchorage, Alaska, Maryann Charos of New Hampshire and Elaine Pitka of Fairbanks, Alaska, and their families; nephews, Mark and Jeff Jones of Georgia, Cy and Amanda Two Elk of Anchorage, Mike Pinkham of Colorado and their families; numerous beloved grandnieces and grandnephews; and numerous friends that she so dearly loved.
She loved going out and painting the town red with her friends Brenda Wilson, Sue Fisk and Tara Conley. She loved and cherished visits from her sweet neighbors, Diane Peterson and her granddaughter CC, Gary and Serina and Sonya. She appreciated the good care she received from HomeWell care services, SCF, ANMC Hospital and Ianka Petkova. She also leaves behind her beloved cat, Shia. She will be missed by all who loved and cherished her. May she rest in eternal peace.
The service will be held at Holy Family Cathedral on Sept. 14, 2024, at 1 p.m., with reception following. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Alaska Humane Society.
