Sep 23, 2024

It is with sadness but peace, we announce the passing of James "Jim" Filmore Hubbs, Jr. (81), a beloved husband, a great father, grandfather, uncle, brother and a wonderful friend on Sept. 23, 2024 in Eagle River, Anchorage, Alaska. Jim had suffered severe illness for the past year, stoically fighting it back to accomplish specific goals in his life. His battle ended peacefully at home with his wife Yvonne with him.

Jim was born to James Filmore Hubbs Sr., and Verna Marie Hudnal in Tulsa, Okla. on Aug. 22, 1943. He joined the US Army and mustered out in 1966 after serving a term at Fort Richardson in Alaska. He met Yvonne Hubbs in Eagle River, Alaska in 1962, and they later married in 1972. He went to work as a track foreman for the Alaska Railroad, retiring from the railroad in 1987. He then went to work for and retired from the Moose Run Golf Course near Fort Richardson. He was an avid golfer and played on numerous golf courses throughout the country.

Jim had a lot of hobbies. . He skied and snow boarded, and became a snowboard instructor at the age of 52. With his work as coach for the Whittier Boxing Club and the Eagle River Boxing Club in the 1980's he was awarded the First Lady Award, presented to him by Bella Hammond, the wife of Governor Jay Hammond. He became a very proficient bowler and helped many excel in their personal games. He was an avid (and successful) hunter and guide and for many years took hundreds of individuals out for their moose, bear, sheep or caribou throughout the State of Alaska. He successfully hunted in Australia and Africa as well. He even spent some time as a taxidermist, mounting animals he had helped others bring in.

During these endeavors, Jim made hundreds of lasting friends worldwide whom he can always count on.. His passion for life, his warmth and laughter, made everyone feel welcome. He will be sorely missed.

Jim's heritage leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Yvonne (Miller) Hubbs; three children, Jamie Lynn (Hubbs) Porter and Michael (Aima) Hubbs both of Florida and Patrick Hubbs (Dede) of Houston, Alaska. He also leaves 9 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren.

A celebration of life – open to ALL friends and family will be held at the VFW Hall, 10527 VFW Road, Eagle River, AK on Oct. 6, 2024 at 2 p.m.
