Philip William Stephens

Philip William Stephens passed away in his home, where he was raised, in Anchorage, Alaska. He leaves his family, at the age of 47, known and loved, protected and beloved. Tragically, he was a lifelong Chiefs fan.
Born in the summer, first of Helen and Robert and more loved than any baby could hope to be, Phil made the best of the first great tragedy in his life, his brother Matthew. Thin-boned and prone to fits, he would need help; and Phil would make him his first student.
After graduating from Dimond High, class of '95, Phil was called to teaching. At University of Alaska Anchorage, Philip would acquire "as many degrees as you have grandparents" in philosophy, political science, English and education. He would go on to teach English at Clark Middle School, and helm the Chess Club. Mr. P's class was never tainted by expectation, nor lacking in direction. Phil would find you where you were and strive to understand.
You might know P from Bitoz, or the classroom or on the diamond. To those that were lucky enough to know him, Phil was one of the most unique, complex and brilliant people on this planet. He lived his life fearlessly and exactly how he wanted - with fierce curiosity and love.
Phil collected good books and bad dogs; he could drink a gallon of milk in a day and make a lifelong friend in an afternoon.
He is survived by his proud father, Robert; chillest brother, Will; greatest student, Kate; little brother, Matt; and bestest girl, Inara. We'll all meet again when all truths are known, and all calamities are broken.
Phillip's faith had been tested, but if there's any way he could rejoin his mother Helen, his faith would find him there. Please join us at Holy Cross Catholic Parish at 11 a.m. on Feb. 24, 2025 - Pirates, wear your blacks if you got 'em.
