Richard Pickens

Richard Ernest Pickens, affectionately known as the "Zam Man" in the hockey community, passed away on April 13, 2025, at Providence Hospital in Anchorage after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on Dec. 28, 1953, in Anchorage to Richard Charles "RC" and Lois Pickens, Richard attended Sand Lake Elementary, Wendler Junior High, and graduated from Dimond High School in 1972.

Richard began his career as a Zamboni driver in 1967 at the Anchorage Sports Arena, later moving to the Ben Boeke Ice Arena in 1974. He started working at the Sullivan Arena in 1982, where he remained employed until his passing. Known for his kindness, Richard was always eager to share his love for hockey, the Sully, and the Zamboni with curious children.

Richard cherished the energy of hockey games, the fans and the camaraderie with patrons and staff. He also had a deep love for the Alaskan outdoors, spending countless days fishing and hunting with his children and siblings.

He is survived by his sons, Drue (Amy) Pickens, Mike Ross Pickens, Kyle (Meghan) Pickens, Tay Kurpius, Joshua Kurpius and Brennen Kurpius; daughters, Kim Filley, Brittney Pickens and Cassandra Kurpius; daughter-in-law, Jessica Lundy; brothers, Marvin (Dawn) Pickens, Billy (Fantasy) Pickens, Eric Pickens and Raymond (Jaunita) Pickens; sisters, Madelyn (Jim) McEwen, Janette (Jason) Pickens and Colleen (Forest) Button; 19 grandchildren; mother of his children, Katie Kurpius; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents, RC and Lois Pickens; son, Michael Max Pickens; sister-in-law, Tana Pickens; nephew, Chad McEwen; and niece, Brittany Cox.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at the Sullivan Arena on May 18, 2025, at 2 p.m. for all of Richard's family, friends and colleagues.

Richard's legacy of kindness and passion for hockey will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
