Amy Lynn Garner Dean

Aug 5, 2024

Amy Lynn Garner Dean passed away peacefully on Aug. 5, 2024, in Boise, Idaho, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 61.

Born in Artesia, N.M., to Pat and Sunny Garner, Amy grew up in Kenai, Alaska, where she spent her youth playing sports, riding dirt bikes and soaking up summers at Tustemena. After graduating from Kenai High School in 1981, she began a 40-plus year career as a hairdresser—though her clients would tell you she was equal parts stylist, therapist and comedian.

Amy had an incredible ability to connect with people. She could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, and always made those around her feel seen, heard and appreciated. She lit up every room with her energy and warmth.

She and Marty, her husband of 30 years, raised two children, Matthew and Alyssa in Anchorage, Alaska. Amy took immense pride in being a mom—never missing a game, event or chance to cheer them on. In 2023, Matthew and his wife, Amber, welcomed Amy's first grandchild, Ricky, who immediately became her greatest joy and best friend. The two shared a special bond full of giggles, snuggles and love.

Amy is survived by her husband, Marty; children, Matthew (Amber) and Alyssa (Slade); grandson, Ricky; and her siblings. She will be remembered for her kindness, humor and the love she so freely gave to others.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Captain Cook Hotel, 939 West 5th Avenue in Anchorage. All are welcome.
