Jun 27, 2025

Former Anchorage, Alaska, resident Dorothy Ann Haynes, 89, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on June 27, 2025. She was at her home in Lakewood, Wash., after a long life of adventure in Alaska. A memorial service and reception are planned for Aug. 9, 2025, at 2 p.m., at Faith Christian Community Church, 4240 Wisconsin Street in Anchorage.

Dorothy was born on Sept. 18, 1935, in Regent, N.D., to Emil and Mary Arneson. The family moved to Washington when she was 2 years old. She grew up on a small farm in Mazama and graduated from Winthrop High.

She went to airline school in Kansas and then got a job working for Western Airlines in Los Angeles, Calif., where she lived for a year before transferring to Seattle, Wash. She met her husband Doug at the airport in Seattle. They married on April 6,1957, and three days later moved to Kodiak, Alaska, where they spent their first year together. She always said "It was the funnest year of our marriage."

After several moves between Anchorage and Seattle, they resettled in Anchorage for the final time in 1970. Doug was working in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Dorothy was working for a small commuter airline called North Air. One day she called him and said "Honey, how would you like to buy an airline?" And so began their time of operating Alaska Aeronautical Industries, which they operated until 1986.

Dorothy then spent 16 years working for the doctors at Anchorage Fracture and Orthopedic Clinic (AFOC). After she retired from AFOC, she went on to work for her daughter and son-in-law and spent the next 11 years at the Alaska Chip Company.

Dorothy loved traveling with her husband and they spent many vacations in Hawaii and Mexico. She also loved dancing, camping, and celebrating birthdays and holidays with family.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Deena and Tim Saffell of Lakewood, and Darcy and Ralph Carney of Anchorage; grandchildren, Jason Brouillett, Amber Saffell, Beth Brouillet, Britney Stites, Haley Therrien and Ally Carney; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Houston Douglas Haynes; daughter and son-in-law, DeLynn and Patrick Brouillet; and four sisters, Lois Campeau, Bertie McMeans, Mildred French and Maxine Montgomery.
