Shawn David McVey of Anchorage, Alaska, was killed in action on Dec. 12, 2025, at the age of 34, while serving with the Ukraine Special Forces. He leaves behind a legacy defined by courage, loyalty and an unbreakable warrior spirit.

Shawn lived boldly and authentically, wearing his heart on his sleeve and standing firmly by what he believed was right. Full of life and conviction, he loved deeply, acted decisively and carried himself with a strength that inspired those around him. Duty, honor and service were not just ideals to him—they were the way he lived.

He proudly served in the United States Army, deploying to Afghanistan and answering the call to serve his country with courage and honor. That commitment to protecting others did not end with his military service. True to his warrior nature and steadfast belief in freedom, Shawn later volunteered as a Foreign National with the Ukraine Special Forces, once again placing himself in harm's way in defense of others.

Shawn is survived by his father, Richard Kaplan; sisters, Amber, Leah, Amy, Cheri and Becca; and brothers, Richard Jr. and Hunter. He is also survived by his grandfather, David, and grandmother, Geri, all of whom will forever carry his memory in our hearts.

Shawn's life was defined by selflessness, bravery and an unwavering willingness to stand for what he believed in. He will be deeply missed and forever honored—for his sacrifice, his service and the powerful spirit he brought into the world.
