Master Sergeant (Ret.) George Taylor was born on Sept. 13, 1937, in Jacksonville, Fla., to the late Wille Taylor and Leola Culbreth-Taylor. George met his future bride, Addie Woodberry, when they were only children. George graduated from Matthew W. Gilbert Junior/Senior High School. On Jan. 22, 1960, he was united in holy matrimony to Addie, and to this union four beautiful daughters were born.
George was drafted into the United States Army in 1961, where he served for 26 years. He was stationed in multiple locations such as Hawaii, Vietnam, Texas, Korea and North Carolina. His final station, where he made his home, was the great state of Alaska. George was honorably discharged in 1987.
George was an active member of the Anchorage community. He was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9978 where he held multiple positions. George was also a member of American Legion Post 29. He also lent his talents as a member of the Disabled American Veterans Association. George was a connecting Link through the Links Incorporated. George enjoyed his volunteer work with the Voice Of Democracy Scholarship Program, Bartlett High School and the Alaska Grambling Connection. He was a faithful member of Greater Friendship Baptist Church.
Those that knew George well always enjoyed his wonderful stories, his delicious cooking and his adventurous fishing trips. His laughter could fill a room. His loving spirit brought joy to all. George loved his family dearly. He was the ultimate family man. Together, George and Addie raised four daughters.
George departed his earthly life on June 18, 2020. He is survived by his devoted, caring, and loving wife, Addie Taylor of 60 years. He cherishes his loving memories with four daughters, June Taylor of Atlanta, Ga., Dionne (Jeffery) Willis of Anchorage, Alaska, and LaToya (Melvin) Randle of Dallas, Texas; one son-in-law, Alfred Winchester of Anchorage; one sister, Theresa (David) Taylor-Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren, Dr. William M. Willis, A.J. Winchester, Victoria Willis, Melvin "Trip" Randle III and Halee Randle; among a host of loving nieces, nephews, many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Tanya Taylor-Winchester; parents, Willie and Leola Taylor; nephew, Henry Lamar; sisters, Lillie Ruth Lamar, Ruby Warren, Gertrude Cleveland, Helen Taylor-Taylor and Frances Taylor-Addison; and brothers, John L. Taylor and Willie B. Taylor.
In lieu of flowers, we are asking for donations to be made, in his honor, to the TTW Foundation, www.TTWFoundation.org. His daughter's college scholarship foundation. Any check donations should be addressed to Addie Taylor.
George Taylor's services will be held on Monday, July 6, 2020, at 12 p.m. at Legacy Heritage Chapel at Angelus, 440 E Klatt Road in Anchorage; 907-336-3338.
Virtual services will also be conducted for social distancing purposes.
A "Celebration of Life" car parade will be held on July 6, 2020, at 7 p.m.
